Piloting pedestrian improvements in Red Wing MN

Temporary improvements can help build community understanding and support for more lasting changes to the urban landscape. Image: temporary curb extension implemented as part of this project.

The City of Red Wing and Live Healthy Red Wing wanted to design and test potential walkability and safety improvements at an intersection near downtown that is programmed for reconstruction in 2021.

CDG developed design concepts and provided implementation guidance for building the temporary improvement while also developing an evaluation process and engagement materials for the Red Wing community. The goal of the concepts was to improve safety and provide the public an enhanced pedestrian experience.

The project was implemented in summer of 2017, and provided valuable information and guidance for the future, permanent improvement.
