Position Available: Entry Level Planner

Position Summary

Community Design Group (CDG) is seeking an energetic, positive, creative and curious Planner for an entry-level position. The Planner will assist in day-to-day operations, working with senior staff on implementing tasks, quality control, and project updates.

An entry level Planner at CDG is responsible for assisting in the development and delivery of high-quality products that exceed client expectations. He or she participates in all stages of project development, from initiation to close; attends project-related off-site meetings (open houses, neighborhood organization meetings, pre-proposal meetings, listening sessions, and others); contributes to the development of high-quality materials and project deliverables; and learns under the direction of more experienced CDG staff.

Our ideal candidate has a passion for working hand-in-hand with communities to create lasting improvement and has personal and professional interest in Active Living and Active Transportation, pedestrian and bicycle planning, community engagement, and public involvement. Skills in working with others, multi-tasking, project management, communication, collaboration, and excellent writing are a must.

We work closely with communities to plan and implement projects and initiatives that improve access to walking, biking and transit, and that improve public spaces, main streets and neighborhoods.

CDG’s pedestrian and bicycle planning practice emphasizes the design and implementation of safe, comfortable, convenient and inviting walking and biking infrastructure as a necessary condition for attracting a greater number of users to non-motorized transportation in our cities.

Roles/Responsibilities

  • Assist in project production tasks, including writing, reviewing, organizing, data entry, filing, reporting, etc.
  • Collect data, field work, and assist in producing maps, graphics, newsletters, fliers
  • Participate in client activities and events
  • Attend off-site meetings when requested
  • Provide support to project managers
  • Ability to travel when requested
  • Strong capacity to lead and self-manage assigned tasks

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning or closely related field (Master’s preferred)
  • One (1) year of planning experience, either as an intern or entry-level planner
  • Outstanding research skills
  • Highly degree of competence in office productivity tools and geographic information systems (GIS), fluency or ability to quickly learn Mac OS and Google Apps systems
  • Detail-oriented, commitment to accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
