Position Summary
Community Design Group (CDG) is seeking a creative, bright and dynamic Project Planner to join our growing practice. The Project Planner will assist in leading and managing non-motorized transportation, active living, and community engagement projects for an array of clients.
He or she will be integrally involved in the design, development, review, and implementation of plans, graphics, maps, reports, facilitated engagement, and other products and services delivered by the firm. The hired Project Planner will help CDG continue to make a difference in the communities it serves, and to deliver the highest quality work products to its clients.
Our ideal candidate has a passion for working hand-in-hand with communities to create lasting improvement and has personal and professional interest in Active Living and Active Transportation, pedestrian and bicycle planning, community engagement, and public involvement. Skills in working with others, multi-tasking, project management, communication, collaboration, and excellent writing are a must.
Projects or project areas will include pedestrian and bicycle planning and design, Safe Routes to School, active living, urban design and land planning, public engagement, and others.

We work closely with communities to plan and implement projects and initiatives that improve access to walking, biking and transit, and that improve public spaces, main streets and neighborhoods.
CDG’s pedestrian and bicycle planning practice emphasizes the design and implementation of safe, comfortable, convenient and inviting walking and biking infrastructure as a necessary condition for attracting a greater number of users to non-motorized transportation in our cities.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Conduct site visits, perform data collection, and research to assess existing community conditions
- Develop design and program recommendations to improve conditions for walking and biking
- Assist in planning, preparing for, and facilitating public engagement listening sessions, workshops, and other meetings
- Manage the workflow and tasks of other staff
- Produce and/or review reports, graphics, and other deliverables to ensure optimal quality and accuracy
- Assist with business development, and the development of proposals, project budgets, and marketing materials
- Use geographic information systems (GIS) to develop and analyze data
- Coordinate directly with clients
Minimum Qualifications
- Passion for pedestrian and bicycle planning, active living, public engagement, vibrant communities, and non-motorized transportation
- Ability to manage and organize multiple project tasks, timelines, and deliverables in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to work closely and collaboratively in a team environment
- Attention to detail in creating concise, informative, and beautiful deliverables
- Bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Civil Engineering, or a related field (Master’s Degree preferred)
- 2+ years of professional experience in transportation planning, engineering, or a related field
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Knowledge of document layout and database software
Desired Qualifications
- 4+ years of professional experience in pedestrian and bicycling planning, active living, transportation planning, engineering, or a related field
- Experience in consulting, including working with clients
- 1+ year of management or supervisory experience
- Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign
- Experience with Mac operating system and software (including Apple Pages, Numbers, and Keynote), and Google Apps
- Working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
- Master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Civil Engineering, or a related field
- AICP or P.E. designation, or the ability to obtain one within one year of hiring date.
